A speech prosthesis

This article was written by Lisa Winter for The Scientist on 31st of March. In this article Ms Winter is talking about scientific test made with artificial intelligence and brain activity.

A study from Nature Neuroscience carried out an experience while a artificial intelligence interpret the signal of four persons who listened to sentences in a text. The participant are epileptic and already had electrodes in their brain. The goal for the artificial intelligence is to associate word with electric signal from participants brains. During this experience 50 sentences were read while brain signals and audio went into a learning algorithm

First results were very inaccurate, because an AI needs time and more samples to learn. But with time the IA increase its accuracy. For example the IA understand «the ladder was used to rescue the cat and the man» as «which ladder will be used to rescue the cat and the man». This technology could be used for silent person or with someone who has a locked-in syndrome.
